The situation of refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine
In a debate at 15.00, MEPs will discuss with Commissioner Johansson and the French Presidency (TBC) how to handle the increasing number of refugees fleeing from the war in Ukraine. According to UNHCR, in less than two weeks close to two million people have left the country. The EU has already agreed to activate the Temporary Protection Directive, to ensure that people fleeing the country get protection in the EU.
Fight against foreign interference and disinformation
Starting at 9.00, MEPs will debate the recommendations made by the Special Committee on Foreign Interference and Disinformation with High Representative Borrell and EC Vice-President Jourová. Among other proposals to counteract malign attacks, the draft text suggests establishing a sanctions regime to deal with foreign meddling and a ban on non-EU financing for political parties. The results of the final vote will be announced on Wednesday. A press conference with the rapporteur and the chair of the committee will take place today at 14.30, in Daphne Caruana Galizia EP pressroom and remotely.
International Women’s Day: ceremony in plenary and debates
To mark International Women’s Day, Ukrainian writer Oksana Zabuzhko will address MEPs during a solemn sitting at noon, followed by a round of political groups’ speakers. In the afternoon, MEPs will look into the EU’s Gender Action Plan and gender mainstreaming. They will then vote on two resolutions (results announced on Thursday).
On Friday 4 March, Parliament published a Eurobarometer survey assessing the impact of the pandemic on various aspects of women’s lives in Europe.
Energy prices and manipulation of the gas market. In view of the increasing energy prices, MEPs will quiz Commissioner Simson about the findings of its investigation into possible anti-competitive behaviour in the gas market. They will also ask which concrete changes at EU level could protect consumers in the future against the volatility of the international gas market.
Political tensions in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where growing secessionist rhetoric and action is threatening the stability of the country, will be the focus of a plenary debate with Commissioner Várhelyi.
Votes
There will be one remote voting session, from 12.30 to 13.45, with results announced at 19.00.
