A single charger for all mobile phones and tablets by the end of 2024

MEPs will discuss with Commission Vice-President Vestager and vote on the new rules obliging all manufacturers to offer a common charging solution by the end of 2024 for all new mobile phones, tablets, cameras and earphones sold in the EU. The law should make consumers’ lives easier and help reduce e-waste. A press conference with the rapporteur will take place at 14.30.

Women’s rights in Iran and repression of protests: debate with Borrell

Plenary will exchange views with High Representative Josep Borrell on the situation in Iran following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini at the hands of the morality police and the sweeping demonstrations, turmoil and repression that ensued. A resolution will be put to the vote on Thursday.

Suspension of funds to Hungary

The Commission’s proposal to freeze funds for Hungary, to protect the EU budget against breaches of the principles of the rule of law, will be the focus of a plenary debate with Commissioner Hahn and the Czech Presidency.

In brief:

Tackling unemployment, poverty and discrimination against Roma people MEPs will ask Commissioner Dalli and the Czech Presidency about their efforts to address the precarious situation of many Roma people living in settlements across Europe. The discussion will be wrapped up with a plenary resolution, to be voted on tomorrow.

Military escalation between Armenia and Azerbaijan. MEPs will quiz EU diplomatic chief Josep Borrell over heightened tensions and clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Fight against illegal wildlife trade. Ahead of the global UN meeting on the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora in Panama on 14-25 November, MEPs will discuss measures to halt illegal wildlife trade with Commissioner Dalli and the Czech Presidency. Tomorrow, MEPs will vote on a draft resolution calling for an end to all trafficking of wild fauna and flora by 2025.


Coup d’état in Burkina Faso. Plenary will review with High Representative Borrell the situation in Burkina Faso, following the removal of military leader Paul-Henri Damiba, eight months after he himself took power in a coup. MEPs will vote on a resolution during the 17-20 October plenary session.

Votes

Between 12.00 and 13.00, MEPs will vote, among others, on:

  • expanding the powers of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and improving the EU’s preparedness to deal with health crises;
  • whether to fast-track a proposal on airport slots and on keeping some exceptions introduced during the pandemic;
  • simplifying cohesion fund rules to mitigate the impact on EU regions and countries of the war in Ukraine;
  • new rules to limit the presence of damaging chemicals in waste, and
  • supporting sustainable aquaculture in the EU.
