International Women’s Day: gender aspects of energy poverty

MEPs and national parliamentarians will discuss the energy crisis and how it is affecting women, at an inter-parliamentary committee meeting on Wednesday morning.

WHEN? Wednesday 1 March from 9:00 to 12:00 CET

WHERE? European Parliament in Brussels, Antall building, room 6Q2.

The annual inter-parliamentary committee meeting marking International Women’s Day (8 March) brings together MEPs and national MPs to discuss gender equality and women’s rights. This year’s theme is the gender aspects of energy poverty.


Women’s Rights and Gender Equality Committee Chair Robert Biedroń (S&D, PL) and Dimítrios Papadimoulis (The Left, EL), Vice-President of the European Parliament responsible for gender equality and diversity, will make the introductory remarks.


A panel discussion with experts will follow with:

  • Sarah Hendriks, Director of Programme, Policy and Intergovernmental Division at UN Women,
  • Ana Margarida Luís De Sousa, Civil, Mechanical and Petroleum Engineer (Instituto Superior Téchnico, University of Lisbon),
  • Katharina Habersbrunner, Head of Energy, Climate and Gender Women Engage for a Common Future (WECF),
  • Juliana Wahlgren, Director of the European Anti-poverty Network (EAPN), and
  • Director of the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE), Carlien Scheele.

MEPs and national MPs will then have chance to debate with the experts. Chair Robert Biedroń will deliver the closing address.

After the meeting, participants will attend the opening of the exhibition of cartoons by young artists ‘Generation Equality: Picture it’.

    WHERE?

    The annual inter-parliamentary committee meeting marking International Women’s Day (8 March) brings together MEPs and national MPs to discuss gender equality and women’s rights. This year’s theme is the gender aspects of energy poverty.


    Women’s Rights and Gender Equality Committee Chair Robert Biedroń (S&D, PL) and Dimítrios Papadimoulis (The Left, EL), Vice-President of the European Parliament responsible for gender equality and diversity, will make the introductory remarks.

    A panel discussion with experts will follow with:


    • Sarah Hendriks, Director of Programme, Policy and Intergovernmental Division at UN Women,
    • Ana Margarida Luís De Sousa, Civil, Mechanical and Petroleum Engineer (Instituto Superior Téchnico, University of Lisbon),
    • Katharina Habersbrunner, Head of Energy, Climate and Gender Women Engage for a Common Future (WECF),
    • Juliana Wahlgren, Director of the European Anti-poverty Network (EAPN), and
