Agriculture: the Commission approves the first Geographical Indication from Iceland, ‘Íslenskt lambakjöt', and a new one from Türkiye, ‘Antakya Künefesi' 

Today the Commission approved the first ever Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) from Iceland, the ‘Íslenskt lambakjöt'. 

‘Íslenskt lambakjöt' is the name given to the meat from pure bred Icelandic lambs, which have been born, raised and slaughtered on the island of Iceland. Sheep farming has a long and rich cultural tradition in Iceland. The characteristics of ‘Íslenskt lambakjöt' first and foremost consists of a high degree of tenderness and gamey taste, due to the fact that lambs roam freely in demarcated wild rangelands and grow in the wild, natural surroundings of Iceland, where they feed on grass and other plants. The long tradition of sheep farming passing down generations on the island has led to high standards of flock management and grazing methods. One of the best examples of traditional Icelandic cooking is lamb meat soup. 

The Commission also approved today ‘Antakya Künefesi' from Türkiye as Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). ‘Antakya Künefesi' is one of the few desserts that contain cheese in Turkey. It is produced in the Hatay province and its districts and künefelik kadayıf (lightly baked thread like dough for künefe), fresh Antakya künefelik cheese (cheese for künefe), butter and syrup are used. The size of the dessert depends on the number of servings to be consumed. The recipe and production skills have been transferred from one generation to the next based on master-apprenticeship relationship.

Mergers: Commission clears acquisition of Eku Energy by MGL and BIC

The European Commission has approved, under the EU Merger Regulation, the acquisition of joint control of Eku Energy Group Limited (‘Eku Energy') of the UK, by Macquarie Group Limited (‘MGL') of Australia, and British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (‘BCI') of Canada.

Eku Energy is a joint venture active in the development, construction, and operation of battery storage assets in Japan, Taiwan and the UK. MGL is a global provider of banking, financial, investment, and fund management services. BCI is an institutional investor, investing on behalf of public sector clients in British Columbia, including public sector pension plans, insurance, and special purpose funds.

The Commission concluded that the proposed acquisition would raise no competition concerns, given that Eku Energy does not have any activities within the European Economic Area. The transaction was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.

L'Eurogroupe et les ministres des affaires économiques et financières se réunissent à Bruxelles les 13 et 14 mars

Les ministres des finances de la zone euro et de l'UE seront à Bruxelles aujourd'hui et demain pour les réunions de l'Eurogroupe et le Conseil ECOFIN.

Aujourd'hui, le vice-président exécutif Dombrovskis et le commissaire Gentiloni représenteront la Commission lors de la réunion de l'Eurogroupe. Les ministres feront le point sur l'évolution macroéconomique et budgétaire dans la zone euro et procéderont à un échange de vues sur les orientations en matière de politique budgétaire présentées par la Commission le 8 mars dernier, en vue d'adopter une déclaration à ce sujet. Les ministres débattront de l'évolution de l'inflation dans la zone euro. Ils s'efforceront également d'approuver les aspects relatifs à la zone euro du réexamen de la gouvernance économique. Enfin, l'Eurogroupe procédera à un échange de vues sur les objectifs stratégiques d'un euro numérique et discutera de la coordination des politiques économiques mondiales dans la perspective des prochaines réunions de printemps du Groupe de la Banque mondiale et du Fonds monétaire international.

Le commissaire Gentiloni participera à la conférence de presse qui suivra la réunion, vers 19h.

Demain, le vice-président exécutif Dombrovskis, les commissaires Hahn, Gentiloni, et McGuinness représenteront la Commission lors de la réunion du Conseil ECOFIN.

D'abord, la Commission présentera ses orientations en matière de politique budgétaire pour 2024. Les ministres procéderont ensuite à un échange de vues sur le réexamen de la gouvernance économique. Ils feront également le point sur la mise en œuvre de la facilité pour la reprise et la résilience et adopteront une décision d'exécution sur le plan national révisé de la Finlande. Les ministres s'efforceront d'approuver des conclusions sur les orientations pour le budget de l'UE pour 2024 et chercheront à adopter une recommandation concernant la décharge à donner à la Commission pour l'exécution du budget général pour l'exercice 2021. La Commission informera les ministres des conséquences économiques et financières de l'invasion de l'Ukraine par la Russie, et plus particulièrement des développements sur les marchés financiers liés à l'énergie. De plus, la présidence suédoise et la Commission informeront le Conseil des résultats de la réunion des ministres des finances et des gouverneurs des banques centrales du G20 qui s'est tenue les 24-25 février 2023, en vue de préparer les prochaines réunions internationales des 10-16 avril 2023.

Le vice-président exécutif Dombrovskis participera à la conférence de presse qui aura lieu vers 14h.

Executive Vice-President Vestager in Latin America to forge stronger cooperation in digital policies, critical raw materials, and science and innovation

Executive Vice-President Margrethe Vestager is visiting Latin America this week to establish deeper cooperation between the EU and Latin America under the Global Gateway strategy, notably in digital technologies and innovation, sustainable raw materials, and research and space, for the benefit of the citizens and businesses in both regions.

She started her tour on Saturday in Chile (11-13 March) where she discussed strengthened collaboration on digital policies and rights including privacy, cybersecurity or platforms. She advanced discussions on forging a strategic partnerships on critical minerals to develop resilient and sustainable value chains, with a focus on clean technologies, and highlighted the great potential of strengthening cooperation in science, innovation and space, based on common priorities. She announced the launch of a new programme to expand the Copernicus data repository to the Latin American and Caribbean region.

In the run-up to the EU–CELAC Summit taking place in July 2023, Executive Vice-President Vestager is travelling on to Colombia for the launch of the EU-LAC Digital Alliance on 14 March, a concrete example of how the EU is stepping up its engagement with Latin American and Caribbean Partners. The EU-LAC Digital Alliance responds to both regions' shared interest to champion a human-centric approach to the digital transformation, focusing on common values and the people's rights and freedoms. This will be supported under Global Gateway, the EU's strategy for delivering trusted and sustainable connections with partner countries in digital, transport and energy and green infrastructure. 

In Colombia, she will meet President Gustavo Petro and several ministers to take forward enhanced cooperation in the digital and green transitions in support of the peace agenda. She will also launch a bilateral investment package with Colombia on digital and green growth as part of the EU-LAC Digital Alliance. 

From 15 until 17 March, Executive Vice-President Vestager will be in Brazil, where she will focus on enhanced cooperation in the areas of digital infrastructure and connectivity, research and innovation, and regulatory cooperation on data governance, cybersecurity, platforms and e-governance. She will also discuss cooperation on critical raw materials.
