European Commission Appoints Aliénor Margerit as Head of Representation in Paris

Today, Aliénor Margerit has been appointed as the new Head of the European Commission Representation in Paris, France. In this function, she will act as the official representative of the European Commission in France under the political authority of President Ursula von der Leyen. The date of effect for this appointment will be determined later.

Ms Margerit brings a long track record of accomplishment and leadership experience to this important role, where she will be tasked with advancing the Commission's priorities and strengthening its visibility at national, regional, and local levels. The Head of Representation position represents a crucially important leadership role, driving  the Representation's work as the eyes, ears, and voice of the European Commission across France - in Paris and with the Regional Office in Marseille.

Ms Margerit's valuable and relevant experience includes navigating some of the EU's most complex negotiations, ranging from Brexit-related financial services adjustments to the coordination of euro-area fiscal policies; mediating between EU institutions, national capitals, and international partners; and fostering public-private partnerships in industrial transition. She has coordinated communications across EU structures, ensuring coherence and clarity in conveying EU policies and positions to both national and international audiences. She has also helped to steer the Commission's communications responses during times of political crisis, notably during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ms Margerit, a French national, previously served as Head of Unit in charge of access to finance in the Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (DG GROW). Before this, she was Head of Unit in charge of economies of Croatia and Spain in the Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs (DG ECFIN). Prior to this, she served as Deputy head of Cabinet of former Commissioner for the Economy, Paolo Gentiloni, in charge of the political strategy, interinstitutional relations and coordination of the overall economic portfolio of the cabinet. Before joining the Commission in 2008, she also worked for banking authorities in France.

Background
The Commission maintains Representations in all EU Member State capitals, as well as Regional Offices in Barcelona, Bonn, Marseille, Milan, Munich, and Wroclaw. The Representations engage with national authorities, stakeholders, and citizens, and inform the media and the public about EU policies. Heads of Representations are appointed by the President of the European Commission and act as her political representatives in the Member State to which they are posted.
